Aims of the Careers Programme 

Our vision is to ensure every Alder student will leave school confident, ambitious, and prepared for life beyond Alder. They will experience an ambitious and inclusive careers programme rooted in our “We Are Alder” values, supporting them with impartial guidance, real-world encounters, and skills development, so that they can make positive and sustained transitions into their chosen post – 16 pathways.  ​ 

Our careers programme is rooted in equal opportunities and challenges stereotypical thinking and attitudes. It helps to remove all barriers to progress that students may encounter and ensures that they receive appropriate information and guidance, especially at key decision and transition points. 

Our careers programme is underpinned by the Gatsby Benchmarks:

Alder students' careers education will be delivered across all curriculum areas throughout their time at Alder. Dedicated lesson time will be provided through Personal Development lessons; however, they will also gain valuable careers related experiences through a range of other events including: 

  • Form time activities 
  • Enrichment days 
  • Ambition weeks 
  • School trips 
  • College taster days 
  • University visits 
  • Mock interview days 
  • Careers fairs 
  • Careers themed assemblies 
  • Employer visits 
  • Work experience 

The first port of call for more information should be your child's form tutor. The Careers Lead at Alder is Mrs Dawson, supported by Mr Oliver who are always available to offer careers related advice. 

All students will have at least one, personal meetings with our careers advisor who will provide independent and impartial careers advice.

Work Experience 

In year 10 all students will take part in work experience during the summer term. More information will be provided during assemblies and form time activities.  

The new government guidance on work experience emphasises meaningful work experiences which will support students to make positive sustained post-16 choices.  

As a result of this we have committed to be part of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) Equalex pilot scheme which focusses on modern day work experience and offering this from KS3.
