Today our school community is remembering local resident Richard ‘Ricky’ Hatton.
Ricky was known personally to many of our staff and students, from his school days in the 90s at Hattersley High School, as a local resident in Hattersley and Gee Cross and as the treasured uncle of Lola and Jack. Those who didn’t know him personally know him as a boxing legend and local business owner.
Some of our staff and students will pay their respects by lining the entrance of school as the funeral cortege passes by and everyone will have the opportunity to sign a book of condolence.
We are taking this opportunity to reflect on and learn about the impact of grief, in particular the impact of grief and loss on children and young people.
We recognise that grief and loss can have a profound impact on a child’s emotional wellbeing, academic performance, and social development. At Alder, we are committed to supporting our students through all aspects of life, including the difficult moments that come with bereavement.
We are pleased to inform you that members of our staff have received specialised training in Grief Recovery from Lessons in Loss GIFTS (Grief Information for Teachers and Services), and are available to provide compassionate, confidential support to students who may be struggling with the loss of a loved one.
Our trained staff members understand that every child process grief differently. Through age-appropriate conversations, guided activities, and emotional check-ins, we aim to create a safe and nurturing space for students to express their feelings, ask questions, and begin healing at their own pace.
Bereavement support may include:
- One-on-one meetings with a trained staff member
- Small group sessions with peers experiencing similar loss
- Access to grief-related resources and literature
- Support for teachers and classmates in responding sensitively
- Guidance for parents on how to support grieving children at home
If your child has recently experienced a loss - whether it be a family member, friend, or someone close; we encourage you to reach out. Our team is here to walk alongside your child during this difficult time.
