Key Stage 3 Curriculum
The focus of computing in key stage 3 will be computer science. Students will develop their computational thinking skills and their knowledge about how computers actually work. Programming skills will be introduced in a variety of programming environments before students focus on Python as their main programming language.
It is also fundamental that students are digitally literate. All pupils at Key Stage 3 will create and design their own graphics, websites, animations and computer games using a wide variety of different software. They will also have opportunities to develop their skills using basic productivity software such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
E-Safety will be covered in depth in year 7 but students will revisit elements each year to ensure that they are safe when using digital technology as their needs change and the dangers that they face evolve.

KS4 Pathway Choices:
GCSE Computer Science
GCSE Computing is split into three units: Computational Thinking and Problem Solving, Computer Science Theory and Programming. Learners studying Computer Science will learn the roles of computer hardware and how they function (eg. RAM, graphics card, motherboard). They will consider the legal and ethical issues in computing (eg. Should google be allowed to track the location of android users? Should Facebook be allowed to see our personal details?). Importantly, all learners will significantly develop their programming skills.

This is a vocationally-related qualification that takes an engaging, practical and inspiring approach to learning and assessment. The course focuses on the development of multimedia content including graphics, audio, video, animation and website design.
The course is examined by means of controlled assessment and a practical examination.
In GCSE Business Studies students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the business world.
Students will investigate huge multinational companies like Apple and Facebook to find out why they are so successful. They will also consider small businesses like their local corner shop or garage.
Students will consider the practical application of business concepts in the following units:
- Marketing – how do businesses promote their products?
- Human resources – how can people be managed to work hard in a business?
- Finance – how do we make sure we have enough cash to continue trading? Can we predict how much profit we will make?
- Business in the real world – What are the different ways of setting up a business?
- Influences on business – how do businesses cope with changes in technology or law?
- Business operations – how do businesses go about purchasing materials and making products to sell?
The different units provide opportunities to explore theories and concepts in the most relevant way, through the context of recent and current events in the business and economic world.
