Year 11 Results Day 

As I am sure you are aware, your child will be receiving Teacher Assessed Grades this year instead of grades derived from formal examinations.

Results day will be on Thursday, 12th August between 9am and 11am in the Sports Hall. Students need to enter the school via the Headway entrance. Attendance requirements are as follows




9am – 10am


A – M

10am – 11am


N - Z


Due to Covid concerns we are asking parents/carers who are bringing their child to school to wait in the car park. Mrs Kelly Hamilton our Year 11 Progress Leader will be available to provide any pastoral support if a student requires it.

Teacher Assessed Grades Policies and Documentation Summer 2021

As we approach half term, I would like to inform you as to what is happening with our year 11 students.  Over this last two weeks there may be some assessments to help support their Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs).   

Any student who believes that their Teacher Assessed Grades may have been affected by mitigating circumstances can contact the Exams Officer (Mr Muddiman) by 8am on Monday 7th June, to ensure that these circumstances are logged and taken into consideration. These circumstances could include:

  • Absence through contracting Covid-19.
  • Learning time lost in school due to having to self isolate as a close contact of a positive case of Covid-19, either individually or as part of a bubble closure within the year group.
  • Absence from school due to a Covid-19 bereavement in the family.

Please bear in mind that it is highly likely that any mitigating circumstances have already been taken into account by the school.

Study leave  

Year 11 students will finish on Thursday, 27th May for study leave.  Students will not be required to come back to school unless they are needed for any additional evidence for the TAGs.  Results day will be on Thursday, 12th August and I will write to you nearer the time about the arrangements for this day. 

Tameside College and Ashton 6th Form College will be in touch with students soon to enable them to access transition work.  I have also been in touch with the following colleges: Cheadle and Marple, Aquinas College, Xaverian and Loreto to let them know what students have missed owing to lockdown.  

Leavers’ assembly 

On Thursday, 27th May we shall say goodbye to our Year 11 students.  Year 11 will be invited to a Leavers’ Breakfast at 8.30am before attending the traditional Leavers’ Assembly later in the morning.  This will be an enjoyable experience for our students and will no doubt end in lots of tears!  It is tradition to sign each other’s shirts if they so wish.  Students will then be dismissed around 12.00pm. 


Positive Steps Career Guidance and Support Service

Year 11s – we know how difficult this last twelve months have been for you. You have coped with remote learning since March 2020, many of you experienced disruptions in education during the Autumn term and a return to remote learning during January and February 2021. Added to this, there has been many weeks of uncertainty as to how your grades will be awarded, and on top of this, you have had to choose Post 16 opportunities without being able to visit college, sixth forms or training providers.

Positive Steps Careers Service and your local authority would like to find out more about your experiences and look at how we can support you to re-emerge from this difficult year, how we can provide activities to help you to make the most of the summer and what support you might need to make a successful transition to your post 16 option. We would be really grateful if you could answer the following questions and make suggestions of what local agencies can do to support you, so that we can help in any way we can.

Please also encourage your parents/carers to add their thoughts at the end.

Teacher Assessed Grades

How will grades be awarded this summer?

Grades for GCSEs, A levels, and most other qualifications including applied generals will be based on a process involving teacher assessment against national standards, internal quality assurance, and external quality assurance by the exam boards.

The national process defined by the Department for Education and the exams’ regulator, Ofqual is as follows:

  1. Teachers will assess students against a national standard, which will be defined by the exam boards before the Easter break.
  2. Departments will submit grades which will be quality assured by the school. This internal quality assurance process will have to be signed off by the exam board to ensure it is rigorous and in line with national standards.
  3. Our school results will be quality assured externally by the exam boards, which may include random sampling of our school’s evidence.
  4. If the exam boards are confident in our submitted results, then the exam boards will award students their final grades.
  5. If students do not think their results are accurate, they will have the right to appeal.

So, do teachers award the grade?

Simply: no. The grade students achieve will start with their teacher’s assessment of their performance across a range of evidence. This is against a nationally defined standard, not the teacher’s own opinion. This assessment is then subject to both internal and external quality assurance before the final grade is awarded by the exam body as usual.

Does this mean grades are decided by an algorithm?

No, unlike last year, students’ grades will not be changed by a formula. The internal and external quality assurance measures will all be done by humans, not an algorithm. There is no limit on the achievement of students, providing they have evidence that they are working at that grade.

What about loss of learning / impact of Covid?

This year, teachers will only assess students on content they have been taught – because of the continued disruption of the pandemic. This means students will not be disadvantaged if they individually, their whole class or whole year group have been unable to complete their full course. However, grades can only be submitted on the basis of the evidence we have of students’ performance, even if that evidence covers less of the course than usual. Students who would usually have extra time in the exams will benefit from the same arrangements in teacher assessment.

Will grades be different between different schools?

No, the standard against which teachers will be assessing students is set nationally by the exam boards. This is the standard that will be used during external quality assurance and appeals to ensure consistency and fairness across the system.

What evidence will be used?

Teachers are able to draw on a range of assessment evidence from across a student’s study of the course, up until the end of May [change to allow time for internal Quality Assurance]. This may include homework tasks, Pre Public Examinations  (PPEs), and papers set by the exam boards. This may include evidence from before the second lockdown, as well as evidence from March – June. The exam boards are producing assessment materials that will be sent to us before Easter. Different departments may use different sources of evidence, and there is no requirement for any one type of assessment to be used – it’s about a performance across a range of evidence.

Can students and parents make the case for why a student should get a higher grade?

Our teachers are already using their professional expertise to assess students on the content they have been taught. Teachers are unable to submit higher grades for students unless they have the evidence that they are consistently working at this level. If teachers submit higher grades without evidence they are committing exam malpractice.

In 2020, any undue pressure by student or parent  on teachers to increase grades was also considered exam malpractice. It is likely to be the same for 2021. If students or parents are found to be putting teachers or leaders under undue pressure to increase grades, then this matter will be referred to the exam boards and an investigation into malpractice may ensue. This may result in the student’s certificate being removed entirely if malpractice is deemed to have taken place.

Can students discuss their grades with teachers?

Teachers will be able to discuss which evidence they are using to inform their judgement with students, including marked or graded pieces of work.

However, we are not allowed to disclose their final submitted grade we give to the exam board.

Students should not attempt to second-guess the grade submitted, as teachers will be using a range of evidence to inform their final judgement. Students must not pressure teachers to reveal the grades they are submitting, or to increase the grades, as doing so may be considered exam malpractice.

What should students do to improve their grades?

The best thing students can do is to continue to attend school every day, learn, act on feedback from their teachers, revise, and read around their subject. Their grade will be based on their performance, and so their outcomes are ultimately in their hands. I cannot stress enough how important the time is between now and when the Teacher Assessed Grades are determined for your child.

How will Alder support your child?

If your child is feeling anxious about any aspect of the process, they can speak with either their Form Tutor or Progress Leader. If they need further clarification about the assessment process, they can speak with me on a one to one basis during form time by making an appointment to see me via their Form Tutor.

I will also be leading a special Year 11 assembly next week to explain to students the process involved in awarding Teacher Assessed Grades and how they can achieve the best grades possible.

We will be scheduling the second set of PPEs for after Easter pending more information being released by the exam boards. As part of your child’s revision for these assessments we will be offering an opportunity for them to attend drop - in sessions after school for each subject that they study. A timetable for these drop - in sessions will be released before the Easter break.
