Head Teacher's Message [July 2015]

Well, the summer holidays are nearly upon us!  Last night we celebrated Awards Evening and it was a great pleasure to see so many students and parents/carers present to celebrate the success of our students.  Once again, this is all possible due to your support, especially through the difficult times.

Staffing changes for September
Some staff will be moving on at the end of term.  Mrs Myers (English)is relocating to Sheffield, Mr Doyle (Curriculum Leader for Computing)is taking up a post as an Assistant Head teacher in Yorkshire and Miss Azam (Psychology and PSHE) is going to teach in Halifax.   From our non-teaching staff, Mr Houghton (HLTA for Maths) is going to Manchester College, Mr Lassandro (HLTA for English) is going on to do his Post Graduate Certificate in Education, Miss Gillespie (Librarian) is going to work in a primary school, Mr Beasley is going to University and Mrs Cummins is finishing her temporary contract in Special Educational Needs.

Joining us on the teaching staff in September are Mr Halton in English, Miss Howarth in PSHE, Mr Doran, our new Curriculum Leader for Computing.  Joining us on the non-teaching staff is Miss Hamilton who will be our new Stage2 assistant.

Miss Bancroft and Mrs Bowles are going on maternity leave this summer and will be covered for the next year by Miss Andrews and Miss Young.


Selling chocolate, Lucozade etc.
I wrote to you in June explaining why students are not allowed to sell chocolate, Lucozade etc. to other students.  Please note from September that any confiscated items will now be kept until the end of the term for parents to collect. 


Yellow buses
If your child uses the school bus please make sure that they have an IGO pass and a yellow school bus pass before the start of the school in September.  Without these passes your child will not be allowed on the school bus. To apply for a pass or renew an existing yellow bus pass you must complete the application form online www.yellowschoolbus.info. An IGO pass application form can be download from http://igo.tfgm.com or picked up from a Travelshop in a main bus station in the area.


Sports Award Evening
On Thursday, 9th July staff, students and their families celebrated the sporting achievements from the 2014/15 academic year.  Photographs from the evening and a full list of the winners can be found on the school website www.aldercommunityhighschool.org.uk

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
Well done to the group of students who spent last weekend on an expedition to complete their Bronze DofE award.  There will be an opportunity in the autumn term for more year 9 and 10 students to take part in the DofE.

Donations please!
If anyone has any old digital cameras they would like to donate or SLR lenses to support our GCSE Photography course we would be most grateful.  Also, if you are aware of any businesses that would like to sponsor school in any way, please let us know.

End of term arrangements
Students will be involved in a mixture of enrichment activities on Thursday, 16th July.    On Friday, 17th July there will be a mixture of normal lessons and assemblies.  Students can wear non uniform on Friday if they wish for a contribution of at least £2 but it must be appropriate; no earrings, studs etc. and no exposed midriffs please!  All proceeds will go towards the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity.  The money will go specifically to support the enhancement of Ward 84, the children’s cancer ward, where one of our year 10 students is currently undergoing treatment.   Students will finish school at 12.30pm.

School is closed on Good Friday (25th March) and Easter Monday (28th March)
Tuesday 19th April 2016 – Friday 27th May 2016
Monday 6th June 2016 – Tuesday 19th July 2016 (finish at 12.30pm)

Training days for staff are Tuesday, 1st September 2015, Monday, 4th January 2016 and Monday 18th April 2016.
